How Much Does a Heat Pump Cost in Western Washington?

Real heat pump price ranges for Western Washington homes, what actually drives the cost, and how PSE rebates and tax credits bring it down.

It's the first question almost everyone asks, and most websites dodge it. Here are honest ranges for the Puget Sound area, what moves the number up or down, and how rebates and tax credits change the math.

The short answer

For a typical Western Washington home, expect a professionally installed heat pump system to land somewhere in these ranges before rebates and tax credits:

  • Ductless mini-split (single zone): $5,000 – $9,000
  • Ductless multi-zone (2–4 heads): $9,000 – $18,000
  • Ducted whole-home heat pump (using existing ductwork): $12,000 – $20,000
  • Dual-fuel system (heat pump + gas furnace): $14,000 – $22,000

These are real installed prices, not equipment-only numbers. Where you land inside a range depends on the factors below — and the price you actually pay can drop substantially once rebates and the federal tax credit are applied.

What actually drives the price

System size and capacity. A bigger home needs more heating and cooling capacity, which means a larger, more expensive outdoor unit. Sizing should be based on a real load calculation, not a rule of thumb — an oversized system costs more upfront and runs less efficiently.

Efficiency tier. Higher-efficiency systems (better SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings) cost more upfront but use less electricity and often unlock larger rebates. Sometimes the higher tier is the cheaper choice after incentives.

Ducted vs. ductless. If your home already has good ductwork, a ducted heat pump can reuse it. If not, ductless mini-splits avoid the cost of installing ducts but add an indoor head in each zone you want to condition.

Your existing setup. Replacing an electric furnace with a heat pump is often simpler than converting from a gas system, which may involve new electrical capacity, a condensate drain, or a different equipment location.

Electrical work. Some older homes need a panel upgrade or a new dedicated circuit to support a heat pump. When that's required, it's a real line item.

How rebates and tax credits change the math

This is where the number on the invoice and the number you actually pay part ways.

  • PSE instant rebates: Puget Sound Energy offers instant rebates on qualifying heat pump and ductless installations — often $300 to $2,400 or more depending on the system and your eligibility, applied as a discount at the time of purchase. See our PSE Rebates Explained guide for the full breakdown.
  • Federal tax credit: The federal energy-efficient home improvement credit can return up to $2,000 on a qualifying heat pump when you file your taxes (consult a tax professional for your situation).
  • Financing: We offer financing through Synchrony, so the upfront cost can be spread into monthly payments.

Stack a PSE rebate with the federal credit and a mid-range heat pump can end up costing thousands less than its sticker price.

Is a heat pump worth it here?

For most Western Washington homes, yes. A single heat pump provides both heating and cooling, so you're not buying two separate systems. Our mild-but-damp climate is close to ideal for heat pump efficiency, and with summers trending warmer, air conditioning is no longer a luxury. Add the rebates and the operating-cost savings over an old furnace or electric baseboard, and the payback is real.

How we quote it

We don't give a real price over the phone, because an honest number depends on your home. During a free in-home estimate we measure your space, look at your existing equipment and electrical, calculate the right size, and then show you every rebate you qualify for — broken out line by line so you can see exactly what's being applied. No pressure, no mystery math.
