Furnace Tips by Treat’s Heating & Cooling

While gas furnaces are efficient they can have problems like any other mechanical system.  When the temperature in your home drops below your comfort level you may wonder why your heater won’t turn on.  There are several reasons why this could be happening.  A few troubleshooting steps can save you time in the long run.

Ensure that your thermostat is set to the heat position and that the set point is below the current room temperature.  Thermostat settings get changed accidentally and are a common reason the heat is no longer working.  Lower the setting several degrees below the current room temperature and see if the system activates.

Verify that your circuit breakers are not tripped.  If they have, reset the breakers.  Your unit may also have a safety switch ensure it is in the “on” position.

If the thermostat and power are operating you can then verify the system has a sufficient flow of gas.  The shut off valve needs to be in the open position.  Sometimes these are closed during the summer as a safety precaution.
