Furnace Tips by Treat’s Heating & Cooling

The cold weather has arrived and you turn your furnace on to find out it won’t start this is something nobody wants to deal with.  There are however; a few things you can do to troubleshoot your gas furnace before calling Treat’s Heating & Cooling for service.

Check the power supply to your furnace.  When a gas furnace won’t start the problem is quite often an electrical one.  If there has been a recent power outage it is important to turn the furnace off at the breaker and wait a few moments then turn it back on to see if it resets itself.  Make sure the switch is on the on position then check your circuit breakers to see if they have been tripped cutting power to your furnace.

Check the thermostat to make sure it is in “heat” mode and the setting is several degrees above the temperature of the home.  If you have a digital thermostat, check to see if it has batteries that have gone bad, this is a simple fix.  If you have a digital thermostat you might get a flashing error code which is helpful for the technician to know.

Lastly, check the pilot light.  In older systems the standing pilot is often a reason the gas furnace won’t start.  If the pilot is lit, you will see a small flame.  If the pilot is not lit, it needs to be to solve the issue.
