Central Air Conditioning by Treat’s Heating & Cooling

Central air conditioners incorporate two different coils in order to cool your home.  This type of cooling system is used to cool the entire home.  A window air conditioner only cools the specific room it is placed in.

The coil placed outside your home is called the condensing coil.  It consists of a compressor, condensing coil condenser fan, a grill to protect people from coming into contact with the fan blade, a case built around all of the components, controls and two refrigerant lines that run into the home to the evaporator.

The refrigerant inside the compressor is pumped through the evaporator coil inside, which cools the air as the furnace fan blows air through the coil.  The coil absorbs the heat from the air.  Then the refrigerant flows back outside to the condenser coil and this is where the heat that was absorbed is released.  At this point, the refrigerant (Freon) is returned to a liquid form as it is cooled and the cycle of refrigerant flow continues.

The compounds involved are refrigerants that have properties enabling them to change at a relatively low temperature.  Air conditioners also contain fans that move warm interior air over these cold refrigerant filled coils.  In fact, central air conditioners have a whole system of ducts designed to funnel air to and from these serpentine, air chilling coils.

Annual maintenance is very important for your air conditioner.  You should be checking the filter at least monthly and changing or cleaning it every three months.  When you have loss of air flow due to a dirty filter, you are not only using more energy but making the components of your air conditioner work harder.
