Furnace filters protect the furnace. They also contribute to good indoor air quality by circulating air through the house. There are many different filters on the market today. Some filters remove large heavy particles in the air but allow smaller particles to flow through, others are pleated and some are washable.
You don’t even want to run your furnace with the wrong size of air filter. An incorrectly sized furnace filter will allow dust and other particles to get around the filter and into your home. Most filters come with information on how often they need to be changed. In general disposable furnace filters should be changed every three months however; if you have pets or smokers in your house you may want to consider changing them more often.
Another factor to think about is allergies. Those that suffer from severe allergies should change their filter as often as they can and may want to consider a HEPA furnace filter. Mold and bacteria can grow on filters if they are not changed frequently.
