You likely already know that your furnace filter is an important component of your system. Treat’s Heating & Cooling recommends annual maintenance on your heating equipment. Here are some reasons why maintenance is so critical.
Without a filter the furnace’s internal components would have significant dirt build-up. If the furnace filter wasn’t ever changed, the system would eventually fail. Manufacturers have designed furnaces with this in mind. Once the filter becomes full its ability to trap more dirt decreases. Perhaps even more important, a full filter restricts the airflow to the furnace. When a system is in need of air, it doesn’t operate efficiently and could cause damage to the furnace eventually.
Frequency of filter changes depend on the type of filter you have but it is recommended to check your filter at least once per month. If it looks dirty, you can change it. At the very least, change your filter every three months unless your furnace calls for a specialty filter that doesn’t need it as often.
