Thermocouples by Treat’s Heating & Cooling
A gas furnace thermocouple is in place to shut off the gas line when the pilot goes out of the flow of gas is interrupted on its way to the pilot. It works as a sensor and if it fails, your furnace will not light. A thermocouple is the right hand man for the pilot as it reads the pilots temperature and rating and tells it to keep the gas flowing. If this temperature is not being hit due to a weak flame from the pilot, the thermocouple will shut off the gas flow to the pilot which shuts the furnace down.
Before Treat’s Heating & Cooling checks the thermocouple we will make sure the gas is shut off. Gas Furnaces have a switch to set to off and we wait a few moments after that. Once this has been completed the pilot cover can be removed which will reveal two upright posts, one is the gas line for the pilot and the other is the thermocouple.
A few of the most common defects with thermocouples are the sensor is not properly located and secured into position in the gas flame and the thermocouple tubing has been damaged, crimped or cut. Most modern gas fueled furnaces use an electronic ignition to start or spark to light the pilot.
